My name is Omar, I attend Nyssa High School and am going to be a Senior this coming up year. I enjoy learning and education but what I really love is sports. I participate in Football and Wrestling. During football I play Defensive Back and Wide Receiver, its is a big responsibility to try to be as good as last years team which had 9 Seniors starting. I have been working really hard to make the switch and feel and try to exceed the Seniors of last year by attending many football camps. When wrestling comes around and the season has started I continue from last seasons success and get better causing me to make fewer mistakes. I have attended State for three years straight and plan to make it my fourth year as a Senior. I have done really well there and even brought back a State Title, I attend anything I can learn from and work on moves I could use to set me in the correct way to making me another Individual State Champion in Oregon. I really don't see any of this being possible without attending Nyssa High School just because the environment we live in and the coaches we have to make us a successful school. Not only are the coaches making us good athletes, they also have a reason to make grades more important than sports and see our education being put in front of sports. All of the staff and coaches know that High School is a huge step in life and to have good grades and make it to a good college once we graduate so that they can see us succeed. I started to think about my education and if I am really going to get a scholarship off of sports to go to college. I had to make sure that I had a back up plan just in case I didn't get my full ride to some of the colleges I wanted to go, I went in to talk to my counselor and she helped me so that I got to be able to go to school in a college I wanted to attend and put me in some of the activities and clubs about college to get me ready for after High School. I heard about OMLI and it has been a honor to come over to this Challenge, it is helping me with my chances to get to go to OSU and love to see myself succeed in life.
Day 2: The Challenge Course
We started the second day off really early, most of us waking up at 5:30 to get ready for a busy day ahead of us and running a mile for exercise at 6:15. The day continued to be getting better after the morning activities, we got to attend a challenge course on Jefferson Street next to the Tsunami Lab. It really got the community going and got people to feel comfortable around everybody, we first started with a quick game of Handkerchief tag then broke into smaller groups and attempted challenges like working with PCP Pipes and making a rail for a ping pong ball to go down into a bucket. A lot of us struggled with that problem but figured it out after working together and having a game plan, it also helped that our group name was Determination.
After the ground challenges we got to work with the High Course, going down zip lines, working with a partner on the Duo Climb and walking across a log 30 feet up in the air while wearing harnesses. We also had solo courses which were the leap of fate, rope walking and a george of the jungle kind of thing that was also 30 feet up in the air. It was a great experience and really fun, it helped us with facing our fears and getting encouragement from others to try new things even when they are scary. This was an amazing week and I had a lot of fun making new friends, I felt that everybody started off being very nervous but at the start of the second day felt comfortable around each other and made new friends. We all worked as team and supported each other when we kept doing the High Courses and it really helped all of us while also boosting up our motivation to face our fears and complete challenges.
OMLI has got all of us doing many activities everyday like kickball, bowling, running at 6:00 a.m., using technology and going to the Aquarium in Newport. My personal opinion is that I loved the Aquarium and bowling the most. I had fun playing bowling with my friends and making memories while competing at the same time, we had a lot of fun just hanging back and laughing at the mistakes of us bowling but cheering when something amazing happened. The best thing probably that happened here that was an activity was going to Newport and being able to see all the aquatic animals, we even bought a video camera that got us to record and follow fish in the tank. There were many interesting aquatic things in there like the jellyfish, sea stars, sting rays and even sharks! I don't think there has been a better week in my life than this one, I will always remember the great memories and the family made through OMLI, I wish we had more time though.
During technology hour we got split up into groups and made videos with Animoto. I got to work with Julio and Jose during this, we had tons of fun recording and adding videos to make ours one of the funniest best videos to see. I really liked the team work and I liked how everything was set up with it. The video is a great thing to see and if you have time feel free to see it.
